Spirit Bay and Cape Reinga - 23rd and 24th of March

Hi,

We are now at the very north of the North Island! We can go no further! We camped at a campsite called Spirit Bay which is by far one of the most beautiful places I have ever been. The sea is clear blue and the sand is golden white but mainly, the ONLY noise was the crashing of the waves. There were no other people in sight. I fell asleep on the beach pretty quickly and ended up getting seriously burnt as usual... but it was worth it.

We went up to Cape Reinga which is the north westernmost tip of the peninsula. The Maori culture believe that Cape Reinga is the point where the spirits of the dead enter the underworld. "Reinga" in the Maori language means "the underworld". The area is also commonly known for whales as they swim into the bays to scratch themselves on the rocks. We watched for a while, but of course saw no whales!

Here are some photos...

Lots of Love,
